Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics AIAA, founded in 1963, is a membership association with some 31,000 individuals representing U.S. aviation and space industries and institutions. It publishes two magazines and six journals. It hosts workshops on UAV-related technology and issues on a random schedule and at various locations. Typical attendance consists of 100 people. Drive, Suite 500 Association of Old Crows AOC, founded in 1964, is a membership association with some 15,000 members in 69 chapters representing the electronic warfare community. It hosts an annual, 2-day conference on military UAV developments. Typical attendance is 300 people. The conference is held in Adelphi, MD each February. Presentations are by closed invitation and are disseminated on CD. Suite 300 Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Founded in 1973, AUVSI is a membership association with 1800 individual and 44 corporate members. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Unmanned Systems, (circulation: 2000) and hosts an annual, 3-day symposium and exhibition. Typical attendance consists of 800 people and 90 exhibitors. The location tends to alternate between Baltimore, MD, (odd years) and Orlando, FL, (even years), with occasional use of other locales. Presentations are solicited with a call for papers and are disseminated on CD afterwards. AUVSI also hosts annual student competitions and satellite symposiums on occasion at various locations. In 2001, it co-hosted the first UAV flying demonstration event, held at Patuxent River, MD. Suite 400 ASTM International ASTM International is an international standards development organization founded in 1898 and headquartered just outside Philadelphia, PA. It established a committee dedicated to developing industry standards for unmanned aircraft systems (F38) in July, 2003 and held its initial meeting in Nov 2003. The committee now has some 200 members, of whom about 40 attend the twice-a-year meetings (May and Nov) to review and discuss UAS standards. Although ASTM has over 30,000 members, participation in any ASTM committee is open to all, regardless of membership, with a material interest, anywhere in the world; only members can vote however. Euro UVS Founded in 1998, Euro UVS is a professional association of European UAV-related industries and government organizations registered in The Netherlands and headquartered in Paris. Its membership consists of 46 honorary individuals and 90 companies from 23 countries. It hosts six annual conferences on UAVs and target drones at various European locations, including Den Haag, Paris, and Brussels. Typical attendance consists of __ people and __ exhibitors. Euro UVS sponsors UCARE, an EC-funded, industry-government "thematic network" for the exchange of information on integrating UAVs into civil airspace. It publishes two magazines and three journals and hosts 30 events worldwide each year. As part of its annual International Symposium on Optical Science and Technology, held since 1956, it hosts an Airborne Reconnaissance conference with a UAV session. POB 10 National Defense Industries Association NDIA, founded in 1997, is a membership association with some 26,000 individual and 900 corporate members representing U.S. defense industries. It has hosted an annual Aerial Targets, Test Ranges, and UAVs symposium and exhibition since 1963. The symposium is held in various locations each October. Typical attendance consists of 250 people and 25 exhibitors. 2111 Wilson Blvd. Naval Air Systems Command NAVAIR conducts a Small UAV Coalition Workshop twice a year in various locations. The focus is on identifying potential applications for small UAVs (Pioneer size or smaller) which are operated by the Maritime UAV Demonstration & Operations (MUDO) team based at Webster Field Annex, St Inigoes, Maryland. The coalition consists of military, federal, and local government agencies, such as battle labs and drug enforcement agencies. Although closed to industry initially, contractors were allowed to attend its July, 2001, meeting for the first time. NAVAIR also hosts a specialized UAV conference on actuators and flight controls. Unit IPT, Suite 255 Remote Control Aerial Photography Association RCAPA is an international association organized to promote and gain recognition for the rapidly expanding field of commercial and recreational aerial photography from remotely piloted aircraft, and to act as a source of information on all technical aspects of producing commercially viable aerial photography from safe, remotely piloted aircraft. It has over 900 members worldwide and sponsors an annual aerial photography contest. See www.rcapa.net The Shephard Press Limited Shephards is a news gathering and publishing business focused on selected aviation markets (UAVs, helicopters, regional airlines). It publishes a quarterly magazine, Unmanned Vehicles, (circulation: 6200), an annual handbook, Shephards Unmanned Vehicles Handbook 200x, and various UAV-related posters. It hosts an annual 3-day UAV symposium and exhibition, whose location alternates between London (even years) and Paris (odd years), and a similar annual venue in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October. The European event's dates are keyed to the week prior to the Farnborough and Paris airshows. Typical attendance consists of 450 people and 30 exhibitors. Presentations are by invitation and are disseminated in hardcopy at the conference. It also manages the annual UK MoD UAV Symposium , begun in 2000, during September in the London area. It will host its first conference in the U.S. (Washington, DC) in 2001. Shephards also maintains www.uvonline.com, a website for daily news on unmanned vehicles. 111 High Street SMi Conferences Ltd The SMi Group is a conference organizing company that conducts seminars on defense, airline, energy, finance, computer, media, pharmaceutical, and telecommunication topics. In defense alone, it conducts 10 or more conferences each month, including an annual one on UAVs. London is the usual location. Attendance is typically 40-60 people. Wharf Technical Analysis and Applications Center TAAC is a business center of New Mexico State University's Physical Science Laboratory, located in Las Cruces, NM. The TAAC offers a wide range of services to its UAV customers, including R&D, engineering, flight and test planning and operations, analysis, and simulation. TAAC offers routine access to the National Airspace System through its local, regional, and high-altitude, long-endurance airspace. It hosts an annual, 3-day conference focused on a variety of issues facing the UAV community along with exhibition area that provides opportunities for all parties to gather information, participate in discussions, and network where all refreshments and social functions will be held. Typical attendance consists of 250 people. The conference is held in a variety of locations throughout New Mexico each October or November. BOX 30002 Technology Training Corporation TTC is a conference organizing company that conducts some 60 2-day seminars on management and defense topics annually in association with the American Institute of Engineers and the Society for Computer Simulation, International. Three of these events are on UAVs, a 2-day annual conference held in the Fall using some 20 invited speakers from government and industry held annually since 1998, a similar 2-day conference held in the Spring on future unmanned systems, and a 2-day course conducted by an invited lecturer. One or more of three locations are typically used, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Washington, DC. The focus is on presenting updates of recent military UAV programs. Course attendance is typically around 20 people. The speaker for the course is paid a small honorarium plus expenses. POB 722 UAV-NET UAV-NET is a thematic network of 15 European industries, research institutes, and universities established in 2001 for the exchange of information on the development, production, and operation of civilian UAVs. It meets once a quarter in various member locations; the inaugural meeting was held in Oct 2001 in Sweden with some 30 participants. UAV-NET has been approved and funded by the European Commission to study the integration of unmanned aviation into European airspace. It sponsors two research programs, USICO, to improve UAV safety and integration into civil airspace, and CAPECON, to investigate new directions for future UAV development. It publishes a quarterly UAVNET Newsletter, whose first issue was Dec 2001. U.K. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems Association Founded in 1998, UAVS is a membership association of British UAV-related industries, institutions, and government agencies. It is focused on integrating UAVs into British civil airspace in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority. The Granary University of Bristol The University of Bristol, in cooperation with Cranfield University and the Royal Aeronautical Society, have sponsored the annual Bristol International UAV Systems Conferences since 1986. Presentations are solicited by a call for papers. The conference is held in Bristol each April. Typical attendance consists of 100 people and 15 exhibitors. Queen's Building UVS Canada UVS Canada, a not-for-profit organization, meets annually in the November timeframe in various Canadian locales. Founded by Ian Glenn of ING Engineering, Inc. in 2003, it attracts some 150 attendees and 20 exhibitors during its 3-day agenda, which is organized into parallel workshops. It also sponsors a Student UVS Competition, begun in 2006. Presentations are by invitation and focus on Canadian-related topics. See www.uvscanada.org.
